Promoting healthy watersheds worldwide

Importance of Watersheds

Healthy watersheds are essential to the resilience of global communities.

With climate change and the destruction of natural ecosystems, watersheds are rapidly depleting, affecting large populations worldwide — 1.1 billion people lack access to water entirely, while 2.7 billion experience water scarcity at least one month per year.

Nature-Based Solutions

When water becomes scarce, the demand for irrigation and transportation of water increases significantly. This can be expensive and costly from an energy perspective, exacerbating climate change and leading to large-scale migrations of vulnerable populations.

Through regenerative agriculture, agroforestry, and reforestation, PUR restores ecosystems to preserve watersheds — helping sustain water cycles, improve water quality and quantity, and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, such as flooding and drought.

Supporting Agricultural Communities

Ecosystem degradation through human activity, including deforestation and soil loss, can disrupt local microclimates and destabilize water cycles.

This can have severe consequences for rainfall patterns and aquifer health — increasing the prevalence of floods and droughts, while endangering the livelihood of agricultural communities.

By preserving watersheds, PUR helps support the resilience of ecosystem services, while actively facilitating agricultural productivity.

Insetting Initiatives for Water

Through insetting, PUR implements proven strategies for restoring watersheds to empower agricultural communities worldwide.

By planting trees and combating deforestation, we help to improve the absorption of precipitation during peak weather events, allowing soils to take in water more slowly — which recharges groundwater reservoirs, while helping to avoid runoff that can lead to flooding.

We also design our projects to enrich soils and prevent erosion, which protects local waterways and reduces the need for irrigation, which is costly and depletes water sources.

At PUR, we empower companies to take responsibility for the impacts of their supply chains — implementing innovative agricultural programs that achieve ambitious ecological goals.
