Coffee

Develop insetting agroforestry projects in your supply chain and supply shed adapted to global industry frameworks.

Main countries of Intervention

PUR currently has on-the-ground teams in 15 coffee-producing countries, where nearly 90% of global coffee is produced. We have worked in Colombia and Ethiopia, the largest producers of arabica coffee, for over a decade.

Agroforestry key outcomes

With the right species mix and agronomic design, transitioning coffee plots to agroforestry models improves coffee yields thanks to shade, better water retention and healthier soils. Planting trees with valuable crops (fruits, nuts, medicinal or timber products) brings additional revenues to farmers. At PUR, we have developed approaches that tailor agroforestry designs to balance carbon sequestration with biodiversity impacts and farmer preferences.

Carbon: PUR has certified the carbon impact of these projects under SustainCert, Gold Standard and Verra methodologies. We support long-term permanence through digitally-enabled monitoring tools and a long-term on-the-ground presence.

Nature: As new frameworks emerge, we support our customers in staying at the leading edge of measuring and certifying ecosystem benefits. PUR has ongoing pilots to capture volumetric water benefits following WRI’s Volumetric Water Benefit Accounting (VWBA) framework, and to measure biodiversity impacts leveraging Cornell’s Biodiversity Progress Index.

Agroforestry at Scale

PUR ensures quality control and supports local actors in maintaining quality at scale through all steps of implementation.

Working within your Supply Chain

With a track record collaborating with actors across the coffee supply chain – including brands, roasters, and traders – PUR leverages its experience to design projects that are tailored to each customer’s needs. This flexibility allows us to deliver a wide range of services, from full project implementation and field operations to advisory support, MRV, and carbon certification management.
PUR will adapt to your supply chain footprint, existing on-the-ground activities and projects, available customer teams and their level of expertise.

Nespresso: Coffee agroforestry

Restoring coffee landscapes and reducing value-chain emissions through long-term agroforestry partnerships across Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Uganda, Ethiopia and Indonesia

Since 2014, Nespresso has partnered with PUR to implement one of the coffee sector’s most established and geographically expansive agroforestry programmes. Designed to reduce Scope 3 emissions through certified carbon removals within Nespresso’s own value chain, the initiative also strengthens the climate resilience of coffee farms while improving farmer livelihoods. To date, more than 9.2 million trees have been delivered to over 38,000 farmers, restoring 13,000 hectares of coffee landscapes and introducing more than 300 tree species adapted to local ecosystems. The program integrates agroforestry with Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) training and long-term farmer empowerment, ensuring planted trees are maintained and benefits sustained.

Nestlé: Coffee agroforestry

Building climate resilience through agroforestry and reforestation in global coffee landscapes across Mexico, Côte d’Ivoire, China, Thailand and Vietnam

As part of the Nestlé Global Reforestation Programme – which aims to plant and grow 200 million trees in sourcing landscapes by 2030 – Nescafé has partnered with PUR since 2020 to implement agroforestry and reforestation projects across its coffee supply chain. The initiative is designed to reduce Scope 3 emissions by certifying the carbon removals generated through the program.

Since its launch, over 2.4 million trees have been delivered, supporting more than 5,800 farmers and restoring over 3,000 hectares of land. More than 150 tree species have been introduced, tailored to local ecosystems and farming needs. The program also includes Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) training and long-term farmer engagement to ensure impact is sustained over time.

Starbucks: Coffee agroforestry

Advancing ethical sourcing through climate-smart agroforestry in Indonesia

As part of Starbucks’ long-standing commitment to ethical sourcing and sustainability, the company has supported the planting of millions of trees in coffee landscapes across 13 countries. Since 2023, Starbucks has partnered with PUR in Aceh, Indonesia, to scale agroforestry interventions that strengthen farm resilience and reduce Scope 3 emissions through certified carbon removals.

The project is set to deliver 700,000 trees by 2028. So far, more than 155,000 trees have been planted, supporting over 700 farmers and targeting 3,000 hectares for restoration. With a focus on locally appropriate tree species (more than ten have been introduced to date) the initiative also includes training in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) to boost long-term productivity and sustainability on coffee farms.
