About Jaga Mangroves
“Jaga mangroves” means “Protect mangroves” in Bahasa Indonesia. Home to an estimated 20% of the world’s mangroves, Indonesia is facing rapid degradation of its remaining mangrove forest – an estimated 50,000ha are still being destroyed each year.
The Jaga mangroves project supports fishermen communities restore their coastal ecosystems by planting various mangrove species on a large-scale. Activities also seek to support livelihoods through small agri-businesses created to harvest valuable commodities from the mangroves, ensuring long-term permanence of the project.
