Supporting farmers in rural areas, where adaptation to climate change and the restoration of native biodiversity are crucial for the sustainability of agricultural activities.
The Pianta Per Bene project was launched in the Southern region of Calabria in 2015 and later expanded to three additional regions across Italy. The project helps to support farmers in rural areas, where adaptation to climate change and native biodiversity restoration are crucial for the sustainability of agricultural activities.
The project is led locally by Associazione Italiana Agricoltura Biologica (AIAB), a non-governmental organization. To align with regenerative agriculture principles, the project focuses on planting native tree species — which are better suited to local weather and soil conditions — to counteract invasive species.
PUR enhanced its impact across Italy in 2022 by launching two new projects in Veneto and Piedmont.
In Veneto, planting activities involved organic farmers and a collaboration with the Valle Averto Reserve, accounting for more than 4,500 trees planted in 2022. In Piedmont, AIAB worked with organic wineries and local institutions to plant 6,000 trees — enhancing biodiversity around farms, while also restoring ecological corridors in rural landscapes.
These interventions are the first stages of a multi-year project in Italy to advance agroforestry and regenerative agriculture across the country.
In 2022, PUR collaborated with the Valle Averto Reserve to plant 2,000 elm, alder, and ash trees, helping to restore an area damaged by invasive species.
The Valle Averto Reserve is located in the southern part of the Venice lagoon, consisting of 78 hectares within a complex system of fish farms. Managed by WWF, the reserve has significant historical importance — with an articulated system of hydraulic works dating back to the 16th century — and contains two Natura 2000 nature protection areas.
A holistic approach to farming that promotes carbon sequestration, soil improvement, watershed health, and biodiversity. Regenerative agriculture helps to enhance the livelihoods of farmers and producers of global commodities through long-term sustainable practices.
In Barduca, Borgoricco, the PUR project consists of the creation of a multifunctional green space made of native trees and shrubs (including oak, hornbeam, elder, field maple, and cherry trees).
This space will contribute to naturalistic and ecological functions, with bordering and sheltering spaces for small farm animals.
In other areas of the farm, highly branched species will be planted to create dense hedges made of field maple and buckthorn — aiming to provide a protective barrier and food source for birds and insects.
